Every field on your certificate is reviewed

New Zealand marriage certificates contain significant personal and legal data. We check each field and document every discrepancy.

Names of both parties
Spelling, spacing, hyphenation, order of given names and surnames — cross-referenced against your passport or birth certificate.
Most common error
Dates of birth & marriage
Both parties' dates of birth and the registered date of marriage. Day/month transpositions are among the most frequent errors in digitised NZ records.
We correct these
Place of birth & marriage
Town, city and country for both parties' births and the marriage venue — including alternative spellings and historical place names.
Parents' full names
Both parties' parents as recorded on the certificate — maiden names, middle names and variations that must match other family documents.

Why accurate certificate data matters

A New Zealand marriage certificate is the official legal record of a marriage issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM). It is the primary document for proving your marriage in New Zealand and internationally.

A single data error — a misspelled name, a wrong date — can cause an immigration application to stall, a name change to be rejected, or a court submission to be questioned. We catch errors before you rely on the certificate for a critical purpose.

If your certificate contains an error, we document it precisely and tell you exactly what to request from BDM to get the record corrected.

What we find

Common errors on NZ marriage certificates

Our review process catches the most frequent error types. Every error we find is documented with the corrected data and guidance on how to fix it.

Critical
Name misspelling or missing given name
A name or middle name recorded incorrectly. This directly causes passport/certificate mismatches that block visa, immigration and name-change applications.
Critical
Date transposition (day/month swapped)
Birth dates recorded as DD/MM sometimes entered as MM/DD during digitisation. A birth date of 3 October can appear as 10 March — causing identity mismatches.
Common
Incorrect place of birth
Town, city or country recorded incorrectly or abbreviated differently from other identity documents. Can create ambiguity in legal or immigration documentation.
Common
Parent name discrepancies
A parent's name recorded with a different spelling, maiden name variation, or missing middle name — causing mismatches with other family records.
Informational
Historical digitisation errors
Errors introduced when handwritten registers were digitised. The original physical register at BDM may be correct — your certificate is not. Correctable with evidence.
Common
Wrong date of marriage
The registered date of marriage recorded incorrectly. Particularly impactful in estate, probate or legal proceedings that depend on the precise marriage date.
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

QWhat do I need to submit for a validation?
Fill in the form with the data as it appears on your BDM certificate — names, dates, places, registration number — and include your email address. If you have supporting documents (passport, birth certificate), mention the relevant details in the "known issue" field. We'll review and send you the report.
QCan you correct my certificate directly?
We identify, document and specify corrections to the data. The official correction to the BDM register must be submitted directly to Births, Deaths and Marriages — only BDM can amend the official record. We give you the exact correction documentation you need to make that application efficiently.
QHow long does it take to receive the email report?
We aim to send validation reports within 1–2 business days of receiving your complete submission. Complex cases involving multiple discrepancies or historical records may take a little longer. You will be informed if we need additional information.
QWhat if my certificate has no errors?
We'll confirm that in the email report. A clear "data confirmed accurate" report can itself be useful documentation — particularly for immigration applications where you want written evidence that the certificate data has been independently reviewed.
QHow do I submit corrections to BDM after receiving the report?
BDM accepts correction requests through their official portal at certificates.services.govt.nz or by post using a BDM correction form. Our email report specifies the exact correction needed and the supporting evidence required. You submit the correction application directly — DocuServices NZ does not submit applications on your behalf.
QIs my data safe?
Yes. We process your data under GDPR (GOV PAPERS SL, Barcelona, Spain) and aligned with the NZ Privacy Act 2020. Your data is used only for the validation purpose stated, handled by limited internal staff, and not retained after the review is complete. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
